Barking Energy Centre

At the heart of a decentralised district energy network, Barking Energy Centre powers over 10,000 homes and saves 12,000 tonnes of carbon annually. United Anodisers partnered with Central Fabrications Midlands Ltd to create a bespoke UnAtex 2131 anodised finish, engineered for long-term performance in a demanding C4 industrial environment.
For this high-profile civic project, United Anodisers produced and tested a range of samples, varying reflectivity and textured designs to achieve a finish unique to the scheme. The 3,000m² of cladding panels are all finished to BS 3987 and their unique UnAtex finish is guaranteed for 25 years against weathering and corrosion.
The robust, low-maintenance system forms the visible “armour” for an innovative building where function is celebrated: pipes, flues, and heat stores remain on display and the adjacent Visitor Centre welcomes the public to see the energy infrastructure in action. Visualy celebrating the local energy infrastructure makes the Barking Energy Centre a local landmark and a symbol of the ambition to make Barking a green energy leader.
The end result is a durable, modern, and highly technical envelope that underpins the sustainability ambitions of Barking and Dagenham’s ground-breaking infrastructure.
